|| MM Rahmatullah: The Malaysia High Commission in Dhaka’s reception to mark Malaysia’s 69th National Day and Malaysia Day 2026 turned into a significant diplomatic gathering on Monday, highlighting renewed interest in strengthening Bangladesh-Malaysia relations across trade, investment, labour migration, technology and regional issues.Hosted by Malaysian High Commissioner Mohd Shuhada Othman at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the capital, the evening brought together senior government officials, diplomats, political leaders and representatives from the public and private sectors.Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moin Khan, the chief guest, conveyed Bangladesh’s greetings to the Malaysian government and people and stressed the need to take the longstanding bilateral relationship to a broader and more strategic level.Recalling the historical links between the two countries, he referred to the 1979 visit to Malaysia by then President Ziaur Rahman and the recent visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.The minister said bilateral trade was currently around US$3 billion, while substantial opportunities remained to expand economic ties through free trade, investment, energy, digital infrastructure, electric vehicles and advanced technology.Labour migration emerged as another key issue. Dr Moin called for safe and transparent recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, stressing that Bangladesh and Malaysia should jointly prevent unscrupulous intermediaries from exploiting migrant workers and job seekers.He also called for expanded cooperation in education, skills development and cultural exchanges and sought Malaysia’s constructive engagement in efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.The reception also saw participation from a delegation of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by its Secretary General and former MP Miah Golam Porwar. He handed High Commissioner Mohd Shuhada Othman a congratulatory message from Jamaat Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman addressed to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.The message expressed hope that the historic friendship and mutual cooperation between the two countries would grow stronger.The presence of diplomats from different countries, political representatives and other prominent guests underscored the importance attached in Dhaka to Malaysia as a longstanding partner, particularly in labour, trade, investment and human-resource development.The reception at the Malaysia High Commission thus provided a fresh diplomatic platform for Bangladesh and Malaysia to reaffirm their enduring friendship while exploring avenues for a more diversified partnership.
