|| Desk Report: Leaders of parents’ organisations on Monday conducted an unannounced inspection of the Mugda campus of Ideal School and College in Dhaka, focusing on the quality of education, classroom environment and various facilities for students and guardians. The inspection was led by Bir Muktijoddha Md Ziaul Kabir Dulu, president of Abhibhabak Oikya Forum, founder chairman of Ideal School and College Parents’ Forum and a donor of the institution. He was accompanied by ASM Alamgir, convener of the Mugda Branch Parents’ Forum. During the visit, the parents’ leaders held discussions with Imam Hossain, former acting principal of Ideal School and College and currently assistant head teacher of the Bengali-medium morning shift at the Mugda campus, and Manzurul Islam, assistant head teacher of the English-version morning shift. They discussed a range of issues, including the quality of education, classroom teaching methods, student attendance, dependence on coaching centres, timely completion of the syllabus, classroom cleanliness, teacher-student ratio, measures to prevent dengue and efforts to keep toilets and bathrooms free from unpleasant odours. The visiting leaders subsequently inspected classrooms, toilets and bathrooms, the campus grounds, staircases, school field and the underground area. They also observed the eastern-side building, where measures are needed to protect students from excessive heat, as well as the inadequate resting arrangements for female guardians near the school entrance. The inspection found that the unpleasant odour in the toilets and bathrooms had improved considerably compared with the past, while overall cleanliness was described as satisfactory. The parents’ leaders, however, stressed the need for immediate measures to protect students from intense sunlight and provide a proper resting facility for female guardians. They also suggested that no sports or physical exercise should be conducted on the school field during class hours, as such activities may disturb the concentration and learning environment of other students. The leaders expressed concern over the construction of an auditorium in the underground area, alleging that crores of taka from the school fund had been wasted on what they described as an ill-considered project. They urged the school authorities to ensure effective classroom teaching so that no student fails in any class. At the same time, they requested the authorities not to promote failing students to higher classes through personal recommendations or other forms of influence. The parents’ leaders also urged the school authorities to take necessary measures from now on to ensure a 100 per cent pass rate in the SSC examinations. They further called for a policy allowing teachers to be transferred between different campuses, where necessary, to improve teaching quality and ensure more effective utilisation of teaching staff. The leaders said the issues identified during the inspection would be brought to the attention of the principal and the chairman of the school’s governing body for speedy resolution.
