|| Parliament Correspondent: Opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has demanded equal membership for government and opposition parties in any special committee formed in the National Parliament, warning that a consensus-based body without balanced representation would ultimately fail and remain deadlocked. Speaking during a scheduled discussion on the July National Charter Constitutional Reform Implementation Order 2025 on Tuesday, the lawmaker welcomed the home minister’s proposal for a special committee but insisted on conditions to ensure its effectiveness.Dr. Rahman said all parties share the common goal of resolving the current crisis through consensus. He acknowledged that discussions around the Constitution Reform Council could be channeled through a dedicated committee, provided it includes an equal number of members from both government and opposition sides.Reminding the house that the core purpose of parliament and the constitution is public welfare, he stressed that political divisions between government and opposition benches are not permanent. He noted that many who once served in the BNP-led government are no longer in politics, calling this the natural evolution of democracy. He affirmed that his party does not represent itself but carries the mandate of the people.Describing his party as a “four-day-old child” in parliament, Dr. Rahman emphasized that laws and constitutions exist for people, not the other way around.He criticized the controversy surrounding the swearing-in of Constitution Reform Council members, stating that such distractions were unnecessary during discussions on a matter of national importance.
