BRUR Correspondent: Journalists working at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), held a human chain on Monday protesting the attack on journalists while they were performing their professional duties at Rajshahi University (RU) and demanding punishment for those responsible. The human chain was held at the university’s Media Chattar around 5:oopm. Members of the Begum Rokeya University Journalists’ Association (BRURJA), along with journalists representing various media outlets at the university, took part in the programme. Sazzadur Rahman, office secretary of BRURJA and university correspondent of Samakal, said such attacks pose a threat to independent journalism. “If such incidents continue, a dark age of journalism will descend on university campuses across Bangladesh,” he said. Abu Sayed, president of BRURJA and university correspondent of Asia Post, condemned the attack on journalists at RU. “The disgraceful attack carried out by Chhatra Dal leaders and activists on journalists while they were performing their professional duties at RU yesterday is highly condemnable,” he said. “Attacking journalists means directly attacking independent journalism and the media. Silencing journalists means silencing independent journalism and the media,” he added. He said attacking journalists without any reason is a punishable offence and demanded a speedy and impartial investigation into the incident, identification of everyone involved and exemplary punishment. He also called on the university administration and the government to ensure the safety and security of journalists. Sakib Sarker, general secretary of the BRUR Press Club, said such incidents are highly deplorable. “If such incidents continue, journalists will eventually be forced to stop writing. This message is intended to alert the administrations across the country and the university authorities so that such incidents do not occur again,” he said. Abu Sayed, president of BRURJA general secretary Kamruzzaman Pulak, joint general secretary Abul Khair Zayed, office secretary Sazzadur Rahman, BRUR Press Club president Gazi Azam, general secretary Sakib Sarker, and journalists representing various media outlets working at the university were present at the human chain. It may be mentioned that on October 4 night, journalists from several media outlets, including Samakal, bdnews24.com, The Daily Star and Agamir Shomoy, were attacked while attempting to record video of Chhatra Dal leaders and activists who were allegedly positioned with local weapons in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall at Rajshahi University.
