Special Correspondent: Farmers of the country are now at a loss regarding fertilizer. There is a movement. There are also incidents of warehouse vandalism. Fertilizer is scarce at the price fixed by the government. Fertilizer is not available anywhere even at a higher price. In such a situation, a huge amount of fertilizer is being smuggled from the country to neighboring countries by water and land. Day after day, fertilizer is being smuggled through Cox's Bazar, Bandarban's Naikshongchhari border, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Chapainawabganj, Jessore and Satkhira borders. A dishonest gang of fertilizer dealers and fertilizer transporters is involved in this in the hope of additional profits. Although one consignment of fertilizer is seized by law enforcement agencies including the BGB and Coast Guard, it cannot be stopped.According to relevant sources, fertilizer is being smuggled from Bangladesh to neighboring countries Myanmar and India. The price of fertilizer in Bangladesh is lower than in India due to the government subsidizing fertilizer imports. And the price of fertilizer in Myanmar is several times higher than in Bangladesh. The smugglers of urea fertilizer worth 1,350 taka per bag in this country are currently selling it for 8,000 taka in Myanmar. The government has allocated 2,343 tons of urea against the demand of 1,843 tons, 475 tons of TSP, 889 tons of DAP against the demand of 789 tons, and 368 tons of MOP for Cox's Bazar this month. But if smuggling is not stopped, there is a fear that the additional allocated fertilizer will be smuggled. There are allegations that dealers are selling fertilizer in retail to many people who are not farmers. Taking this opportunity, members of the gang stock up on fertilizer and smuggle it. As a result, even though marginal farmers do not get fertilizer, the smugglers are getting it.Sources said that from June to September 15 of this year, the Coast Guard and BGB seized 235,908 kg of fertilizer from the Cox's Bazar and Bandarban borders. In those incidents, 117 people were arrested and cases were filed on charges of fertilizer smuggling. Mainly, boatmen, people living and hired near the coast and border are smuggling fertilizer using various coastal roads including Teknaf and Ukhia in Cox's Bazar, Tumbru and Ghumdhum in Naiksyangchhari. Sometimes, trawlers, cargo boats and carriers carrying fertilizer are arrested in raids by law enforcement agencies, but the main culprits behind the smuggling remain undetected. As a result, despite the seizure of one consignment after another, the illegal trade of fertilizer smuggling is not stopping. Along with the sea route, smugglers are also using various border points on land and river routes. Fertilizer is being smuggled into Myanmar constantly through the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar road route, the estuary of the Karnaphuli River and various coastal areas. In addition to fertilizer smuggling from Bangladesh, drugs like Yaba, Ice, and firearms are also coming into the country. Organized smuggling rings are involved in this. Sources also said that some unscrupulous dealers, farmers, boatmen and people living on the coast are working for the smuggling gang for money. The gang is also involved in drug dealing and human trafficking. They sell drugs with Myanmar products. And drug traffickers are exploiting this opportunity. There are allegations of fertilizer smuggling to Myanmar through at least 15 points in Ukhia and Teknaf. One of the main routes is Anjumanpara in Ward No. 9 of Palangkhali Union in Ukhia. In addition, Ulubonia, Haraingaghona, Jhimongkhali, Kanjorpara, Tulatli, Konarpara and Amtali in Hoaikyong in Teknaf and Leda, Damdamia Canal, Hnila Bazar, Station and Rangikhali in Hnila have also been identified as smuggling routes locally. And most of the bordering places in Ghumdhum Union in Naiksyangchhari have been identified as smuggling points.Meanwhile, the district administration and agriculture officials are conducting field investigations into various allegations including fertilizer smuggling and excessive pricing. Action has already been recommended against about 10 to 12 dealers in the border area. The Department of Agricultural Extension has blacklisted those involved in irregularities. On the other hand, Coast Guard Media Officer Lt. Commander BN Sabbir Alam Sujan said that most of those arrested in the operation are workers. They are trying to make the main culprits in the case by talking to them. And his responsibility is the investigation officer. The investigation agency will be able to say what kind of crimes those involved in fertilizer smuggling are involved in.In this context, Teknaf-2 BGB commander Lt. Col. Ashikur Rahman said that in addition to accusing those who were caught red-handed during the operation, those whose names were found through intelligence information or during the initial interrogation of the arrested have also been accused.
