|| From Putrajaya, Malaysia: In a significant development for overseas employment, Malaysia has agreed to reopen its labour market for workers from Bangladesh, alongside commitments to reduce migration costs and ensure a more transparent recruitment process.The decision came following a high-level bilateral meeting held in Putrajaya, where both nations engaged in detailed discussions on labour migration, recruitment reforms, and broader economic cooperation. Officials described the talks as “fruitful” and underscored a shared commitment to ethical, fair, and efficient worker mobility.The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, accompanied by Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin. During the visit, Minister Chowdhury held a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at his office in Putrajaya.Prime Minister Ibrahim congratulated Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on his election victory and extended an invitation for an official visit to Malaysia. He also praised Bangladesh’s democratic journey and its continued socio-economic progress.Focus on Ethical Recruitment: According to a joint statement issued after the meeting, both countries agreed to expedite the reopening of Malaysia’s labour market based on sector-specific demand. Central to the agreement is the establishment of a “fair, ethical, and transparent” recruitment system designed to eliminate exploitation and reduce excessive migration costs.A key highlight of the discussions was Malaysia’s plan to introduce a technology-driven, AI-based recruitment platform. This system aims to minimize the role of intermediaries, ensure accountability, and implement the International Labour Organization’s “employer pays” principle—potentially reducing recruitment costs for workers to zero.Bangladesh expressed full support for the initiative and pledged cooperation in implementing the digital system as part of a broader global framework for labour migration.Addressing Challenges and Expanding Cooperation: Both sides also addressed ongoing concerns related to human trafficking cases in labour recruitment. Malaysia stressed the importance of safeguarding its international reputation against unfounded allegations, while Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to due process, accountability, and the rule of law.Discussions further covered the regularization of undocumented workers, improving skills training and certification, and aligning labour supply with market demand. Officials emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional collaboration, academic exchanges, and people-to-people ties.The Malaysian delegation at the bilateral talks was led by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan.Strengthening Bilateral Relations: Both countries expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of their bilateral relations and reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation across labour migration, trade, investment, and education sectors.The reopening of Malaysia’s labour market is expected to provide renewed opportunities for thousands of Bangladeshi workers while marking a step forward in ensuring safer, more transparent, and cost-effective migration pathways.
