Sylhet Bureau Office: Journalists, writers, and cultural activists formed a human chain at Sylhet’s Court Point, Bandar Bazar at 11 am today to protest the terrorist attack on journalist Mosleh Uddin Bachchu and the ongoing harassment of journalists across the country. The program was organized by the Society of National Media Commission, Sylhet Division. Journalist Kamal Khan, founder of the Sylhet division unit, presided over the event, while journalist Juber Ahmed Surgeon moderated. Researcher, poet, and Labour Party district president Dewan Motiur Rahman Khan attended as chief guest. Speaking at the human chain, Kamal Khan strongly condemned the attack on Mosleh Uddin Bachchu and demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits. “Attacks, harassment, and torture of journalists are increasing across the country. The government must take effective steps to ensure journalists’ safety,” he said. Other speakers included Nuruddin Rasel, Managing Editor of weekly Boichitramoy Sylhet; Shahan Uddin Naju, Sylhet District Correspondent of Daily Alokito Sokal; Abdul Ahad, Assistant General Secretary of Swarnali Sahitya Parishad, Sylhet; Limon Ahmed, Sylhet District Correspondent of Daily Jagroto Kontho; senior journalist Harunur Rashid Sangram; Sharif Ahmed, photographer of Daily Matrijagat; Md. Shihab Uddin, Sylhet Sadar Correspondent of weekly Jatiya Todonto Report; Abul Kalam, Divisional Bureau Chief of Swadesh Protidin; Hossain Ahmed, Assistant Organizing Secretary of Society of National Media Commission, Sylhet; Md. Nizam Uddin of Daily Bangladesh Samachar; and journalists Abul Kalam and Sohag. Speakers said the brutal attack on a professional journalist is not an isolated incident. “This is a direct assault on independent journalism, freedom of expression, and media safety. We strongly urge the administration and law enforcement agencies to arrest the attackers immediately and ensure a fair, impartial investigation,” they said. The chief guest pledged to remain vocal against any attack on journalists and to launch tougher programs if necessary. Journalists from various media outlets, literary and cultural figures, and concerned citizens joined the human chain. It may be mentioned that journalist Md. Mosleh Uddin Bachchu, General Secretary of Dhaka Press Club and member of Dhaka Journalists Union, was brutally attacked with hammers and sticks by a terrorist group in BK Bari area under Mirzapur Union, Joydebpur, Gazipur Sadar. The attack was allegedly premeditated and intended to kill him. He sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
