Atrai (Naogaon) Correspondent: Residents of Atrai Upazila in Naogaon district organized a human chain, signature campaign, and protest program alleging that misleading information and emotional propaganda were used to secure bail for an accused drug dealer, thereby obstructing the local anti-drug social movement. Speakers at the protest expressed anger against local Facebook content creator “M R Rocky.”According to local sources, on May 14, a Facebook page named “M R Rocky” circulated an emotional photo card and post on social media claiming that, “The husband died two months ago, the wife is jailed in a conspiracy case over land grabbing, and three orphaned children have been wandering around the jail gate for 15 days seeking their mother.”Locals allege that such emotional campaigning was intended to create public sympathy. However, residents claim that the accused, Mosha. Akhi Akter, is actually facing multiple ongoing drug-related cases and has long been known in the area for involvement in drug trafficking. It has also been alleged that the post suggested the matter reached higher levels of the government and that political and administrative influence was used to secure her bail. However, when contacted, most concerned political figures declined to comment directly on the issue.Residents further alleged that by concealing factual information and spreading emotional and misleading narratives, an attempt was made to generate public support for a well-known drug case accused, which is sending a negative message to society and weakening the anti-drug social movement.Speakers at the human chain said that the spread of drugs in Atrai Upazila has recently reached an alarming level. They stated that drug addiction is causing family breakdowns, social instability, and even loss of lives. They also mentioned that several recent deaths linked to drug abuse and addiction in different parts of the upazila have deeply alarmed local residents. The speakers further said that the administration, conscious citizens, and the youth are working together to eliminate drugs from society. However, when certain individuals use journalism and social media platforms to campaign in favor of people connected to drugs, it obstructs public efforts against narcotics.Youth representatives participating in the human chain alleged that after they initiated a social movement against drugs and helped hand over several identified drug dealers and addicts to law enforcement, propaganda campaigns were launched against them. They claimed that labeling them as a “juvenile gang” in various social media posts was completely false and politically motivated. They said, “We are assisting the administration in building a drug-free society. But some individuals are trying to discredit the anti-drug movement through social media campaigns. This discourages the younger generation.”Participants in the human chain, held on May 19 at the Atrai-Naogaon CNG stand area, demanded a neutral investigation into the spread of misleading information, legal action against those responsible for propaganda, and an end to attempts to create public sympathy for individuals involved in drug-related activities. At the same time, they emphasized that journalism is a responsible profession. Therefore, emotional and misleading campaigns without proper fact-checking create confusion in society and harm ongoing social initiatives aimed at preventing crime. The speakers also stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among the administration, media, and conscious citizens to eliminate drugs from society.
