Pirojpur Correspondent: A driver named Kamal Bahadur (38) died after a steel-bodied local timber-laden
trawler named “Fiana-Fatema” sank due to a strong water current in Nesarabad
upazila of Pirojpur district. He was the son of Md. Halim Bahadur of Monohorpur
village under Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur.
The accident took place on Wednesday night (May 21) near the bridge adjacent to
the house of late Haji Abdur Rahman in Balihari canal of the upazila. The owner
of the sunken trawler is Md. Rifat Hossain, son of Md. Keramat Ali of Sohagdal
area.
According to local sources, the timber-laden trawler reached the
Balihari-Adarshaboya bridge area of Balihari canal at around 3:00 pm. As the
canal was experiencing low tide, the trawler was tied between two pillars of
the bridge. Since the vessel remained stationary, driver Kamal Bahadur went to
sleep inside the cabin.
At around 2:00 am, the water level rose due to high tide, and the strong
current caused the trawler to sink. At that time, Kamal Bahadur became trapped
inside the cabin while asleep and drowned.
The following day, Friday (May 22) at around 6:00 am, trawler owner Rifat
arrived at the scene after being informed of the incident by locals. Diver
Haidar and his assistants later conducted a rescue operation and recovered the
body of Kamal Bahadur from the submerged cabin at around 11:00 am.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nesarabad Police Station, Mehdi Hasan, said police
recovered the body and brought it to the station after receiving the
information. An unnatural death (UD) case will be filed in connection with the
incident. After an autopsy, the body will be handed over to the family.
