|| Desk Report: Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud MP, a central executive committee member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Secretary of its Dhaka South City unit, has warned that failure by the government to take appropriate decisions regarding Islami Bank could put the country’s economy at serious risk.Speaking as the chief guest at a training session for selected (Rukon) members of the Shyampur zone of Jamaat-e-Islami, held on Friday, Dr. Masud said Islami Bank is not a conventional financial institution but a “backbone” of the national economy. He stressed that the bank’s governance should be restructured through a board formed with “genuine stakeholders” to ensure stability and public trust.He further alleged that during the previous Awami League government, financial irregularities and alleged money laundering involving the S Alam Group took place through Islami Bank. He demanded that any illicitly transferred funds be recovered and that individuals allegedly linked to irregularities within the bank be identified and brought under legal action.Calling for protection of depositors’ interests, Dr. Masud emphasized the need to appoint “honest, competent and ideologically committed” individuals to the bank’s board of directors. He also stated that the opposition, including Jamaat-e-Islami, is prepared to cooperate with the government in safeguarding the national economy.“However, if the government aligns itself with any hegemonic influence against national interest, necessary steps will be taken to bring it back on the right path,” he warned.He also criticized the government’s foreign policy stance, claiming it has failed to address issues such as border killings and alleged push-ins, and has not been able to resolve disputes with neighboring countries on the basis of fairness and equality.The event was presided over by Syed Zainul Abedin MP, member of the Dhaka South City Jamaat working committee and Nayeb-e-Ameer of the unit. Other speakers included educator Abdus Sobur Fakir, Moulana Mufti Mohiuddin, Abdul Rahim Jibon, and Moulana Sadiq Billah, among others. Local party leaders and organizational members from Shyampur and surrounding areas were also present.
