Md. Tanju Ahmed, Raipur: A severe breakdown in the sewage and waste disposal system has persisted for
a long time at Gazi Complex, one of the major residential and commercial
buildings in Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur. Human waste and contaminated
wastewater have been overflowing from the building's septic tank and spreading
onto nearby roads, causing an unbearable stench that has made life difficult
for local residents and business owners. The 11-storey Gazi Complex, one of the busiest multi-storey buildings in
Raipur, is home to more than 500 residents. It also accommodates numerous
commercial establishments and business offices. According to local residents,
although the building's sewage system has been malfunctioning for a long time,
the authorities have failed to take any effective measures to repair it.As a result, the septic tank at the rear of the building has exceeded its
capacity, causing human waste and dark, polluted wastewater to overflow
continuously onto the surrounding roads. This has created an extremely
unpleasant environment across the area. The stagnant waste has also become a
breeding ground for disease-causing pathogens and mosquitoes, posing a serious
threat to public health. The overflowing sewage has created severe difficulties for pedestrians,
local residents, and business owners in this busy commercial area. The
unbearable foul smell has discouraged customers from visiting nearby shops,
leading to a decline in business activities. Residents of the multi-storey
building are also forced to pass through the unsanitary surroundings every day. Those affected say that living and conducting business in such unhygienic
conditions has become increasingly unbearable. They have called on the building
owners and the relevant local authorities to intervene immediately and take
effective measures to permanently resolve the long-standing sewage problem and
protect the environment and public health.
