MM Rahmatullah: Nurul Islam Bulbul, a central executive council member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Ameer of the party's Dhaka South unit, has called for a zero-tolerance policy against extortionists and violent criminals following an attack on traders participating in an anti-extortion procession in the capital.Speaking to reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday night after visiting injured victims, Bulbul said that "murderers, terrorists and extortionists are enemies of the nation and have no political identity." He also alleged that those who shelter or patronise such criminals are equally enemies of the country. The Jamaat leader criticised law enforcement for what he described as a lack of visible action following Friday's attack in Gulistan, where traders protesting against extortion were reportedly assaulted with sharp weapons around 5:00 pm.Bulbul questioned the role of the police, claiming their response to the incident had been "suspicious" and alleging that their conduct suggested they were protecting criminals rather than serving the public. He further asserted that police were aware of the identities and political affiliations of those responsible for the attack and demanded their immediate arrest.Warning of possible protests, he said the business community would be compelled to take to the streets if swift action was not taken against those involved.Referring to what he described as the spirit of the July movement, Bulbul said students and citizens remained united and could mobilise at any time against murderers, terrorists and extortionists. He urged the government to adopt a strict zero-tolerance approach to curb organised crime and improve the country's law and order situation."The government must improve the law and order situation in its own interest," he said.Bulbul visited the injured traders at Dhaka Medical College Hospital accompanied by several senior leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including members of the party's central executive and Dhaka South leadership.Meanwhile, local residents said fear and anxiety have spread among traders in the Gulistan area following the attack, with many expressing concerns over security and the growing threat of extortion-related violence.
