Known as the Halal Economy, it has evolved far beyond its traditional association with religious dietary requirements into one of the world’s fastest-growing economic ecosystems. Today, the halal economy encompasses food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion, tourism, logistics, financial services, digital technology, education, biotechnology, and research.What was once viewed primarily as a religious concept has become an internationally recognized benchmark for quality, safety, ethical production, transparency, and consumer confidence. Increasingly, halal products are sought not only by Muslims but also by non-Muslim consumers who value clean production, traceability, and responsible business practices.With the global Muslim population projected to approach one-quarter of humanity by 2050, demand for halal-certified products and services will continue to expand. At the same time, rising health consciousness and ethical consumption trends are broadening the appeal of halal goods well beyond Muslim-majority markets.The economic implications are enormous.The global halal economy is currently estimated at approximately US$5.2 trillion, and many industry projections suggest that it could exceed US$9 trillion within the next decade. Yet Bangladesh—a country with significant industrial capacity and one of the world’s largest Muslim populations—has secured only a modest share of this rapidly expanding market.Bangladesh’s annual halal exports remain below US$1 billion, estimated at around US$850 million. Considering the country’s production capabilities, this figure represents not a lack of potential but a missed strategic opportunity.A Strong Foundation for GrowthBangladesh possesses many of the fundamental ingredients necessary to become a major player in the global halal economy.Its ready-made garment industry is the second largest in the world. The pharmaceutical sector exports to more than one hundred countries. Agriculture, fisheries, shrimp, livestock, leather goods, ceramics, jute products, processed foods, and cosmetics all demonstrate considerable export potential.If these sectors consistently comply with internationally recognized halal standards and obtain globally accepted certification, Bangladesh could significantly strengthen its position in the lucrative markets of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Southeast Asia, Africa, Central Asia, and Muslim communities across Europe and North America.Importantly, halal certification should not be viewed merely as a religious requirement. It is increasingly recognized as an internationally respected quality assurance mechanism that enhances consumer confidence and expands market access.The Missing Link: International CredibilityBangladesh’s principal challenge does not lie in production capacity. Rather, it lies in institutional readiness.The country still lacks a robust, internationally recognized national halal accreditation framework capable of securing widespread acceptance in major export destinations.Although several organizations issue halal certificates domestically, many exporters must obtain additional certification from internationally recognized bodies in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, or elsewhere before accessing premium markets.This duplication increases costs, delays exports, reduces competitiveness, and creates unnecessary barriers—particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.Removing these institutional bottlenecks should therefore become a national economic priority.Halal Is an Entire Economic EcosystemOne of the most common misconceptions is that halal concerns only meat or food products.In reality, today’s halal economy extends across numerous sectors, including:* Food and beverages* Pharmaceuticals and healthcare products* Cosmetics and personal care* Textiles and apparel* Tourism and hospitality* Logistics and supply chain management* Islamic finance* Digital commerce and technology* Education and research* Biotechnology and innovationThis diversification presents Bangladesh with opportunities far beyond traditional exports.For example, halal-certified textile manufacturing could unlock substantial demand from Muslim consumers worldwide. Likewise, the pharmaceutical industry could strengthen its competitiveness by ensuring halal compliance in ingredients, manufacturing processes, and quality assurance systems.Learning from Global Success StoriesSeveral countries offer valuable lessons.Malaysia transformed halal into a national economic strategy by establishing the internationally respected JAKIM certification system. Today, Malaysian halal certification enjoys global recognition and facilitates international trade.Indonesia has developed a comprehensive regulatory framework through BPJPH, while Türkiye continues to strengthen its competitiveness by aligning with internationally recognized halal standards developed under SMIIC.Perhaps the most instructive example is Brazil.Despite having a relatively small Muslim population, Brazil has become one of the world’s leading exporters of halal meat through rigorous quality control, internationally accepted certification, efficient logistics, and strategic global marketing.Thailand has similarly integrated halal food production into its broader “Kitchen of the World” strategy, successfully positioning itself as an important supplier to Muslim markets.These examples clearly demonstrate that leadership in the halal economy depends not on religious demographics but on strategic planning, institutional excellence, and international credibility.A National Strategy for BangladeshTo realize its potential, Bangladesh should pursue a comprehensive national strategy.The first priority should be establishing an internationally recognized National Halal Accreditation Authority whose certifications are accepted by key importing countries.Equally important is institutional coordination among the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Industries, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Livestock Services, the Islamic Foundation, universities, research institutions, and private-sector stakeholders.Investment is also needed in internationally accredited laboratories, digital traceability systems, quality assurance mechanisms, and professional training for halal auditors and inspectors.Higher education institutions should introduce specialized academic programs in Halal Science, Halal Management, Halal Supply Chain Management, Islamic Quality Assurance, and related disciplines to develop the skilled workforce required by this emerging industry.Furthermore, government support—including financial incentives and affordable certification services—would enable small and medium-sized enterprises to participate effectively in international halal markets.Beyond Exports: Building Bangladesh’s Global BrandThe halal economy offers Bangladesh more than export diversification.It presents an opportunity to strengthen the country’s international reputation.Just as Japan symbolizes technological excellence, Germany engineering precision, and Switzerland quality craftsmanship, Bangladesh can establish itself as a trusted source of high-quality halal products manufactured according to globally recognized standards.Achieving this vision will require strategic national branding, proactive commercial diplomacy, participation in international halal exhibitions, stronger trade partnerships, and sustained promotion of Bangladesh as a reliable halal manufacturing hub.Looking AheadThe halal economy is no longer a niche market. It is becoming one of the defining pillars of twenty-first-century global commerce.Bangladesh possesses abundant natural resources, a dynamic manufacturing sector, an experienced export industry, competitive labor, and favorable geographic connectivity. These advantages provide a strong foundation for becoming a significant participant in this rapidly expanding global market.Yet opportunities of this magnitude do not materialize automatically.They require visionary leadership, sound public policy, internationally credible institutions, investment in research and innovation, and unwavering commitment to global standards.If Bangladesh begins implementing these reforms today, surpassing the US$1 billion halal export threshold within the next decade should represent only the beginning. With sustained policy support and strategic investment, the country has every opportunity to emerge as a multi-billion-dollar halal export powerhouse.Such progress would not only increase export earnings but also create employment, attract foreign investment, stimulate industrial diversification, strengthen economic resilience, and elevate Bangladesh’s standing in the global marketplace.The window of opportunity is open. The challenge now is whether Bangladesh has the vision and determination to seize it.
