New Govt sparks public optimism with reform-oriented leadership style

Enamul Haque Bhuiyan: Following the dramatic political shift in July–August, which ended nearly 17 years of what many described as a suppression of voting rights, a newly elected government has taken office through what observers call a free, fair, and neutral election. The transition has largely put to rest widespread speculation about the future of the country’s democratic gains.
Despite initial concerns over whether the hard-earned victory would be sustained, early signs suggest a positive trajectory. The new administration’s actions within a short period have already generated a sense of hope among citizens. Many now express a desire for this momentum of change to continue, with an emphasis on maintaining constructive criticism and ensuring full accountability.
A noticeable transformation has emerged in leadership style, particularly when comparing the current Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, with his predecessor. His modest demeanor, measured communication, and simple, Western-influenced conduct have drawn public praise. Reports highlight his punctuality, limited use of official protocol, and willingness to follow traffic laws without demanding special privileges—even if it means waiting in traffic like ordinary citizens.
Institutional reforms are also becoming evident. Cabinet members have reportedly been discouraged from excessive media engagement, while a 180-day performance evaluation framework has been introduced to ensure transparency and accountability.
It has been reported that the activities of administrative officials are being closely monitored.
Positive changes are also becoming evident in grassroots political activities. Analysts believe that if efforts such as restoring the morale of a weakened law enforcement force, prioritizing merit in key state positions, and consulting with religious scholars are part of the Prime Minister’s broader plan, then the goals of the recent movement have largely been achieved.
However, some warnings are emerging regarding the upcoming local government elections. Observers suggest that poor decisions in candidate nominations could undermine these achievements. In particular, emphasis is being placed on valuing long-time dedicated party workers while excluding individuals involved in extortion or criminal activities.
A recent incident has also sparked discussion on social media. Before iftar, when a minister’s vehicle was stuck in traffic and a request was made to clear the signal, the on-duty traffic police officer refused, stating, “Even the Honorable Prime Minister sits in traffic jams and does not ask for the roads to be cleared.” Many are viewing this incident as a symbol of a new era—where equality in the enforcement of the law and the voice of ordinary citizens are gaining importance.
According to analysts, this transformation reflects the true spirit of July–August—where, instead of the display of unjust power, accountability, justice, and citizens’ dignity are becoming the central values.
