Business Desk: Saudi Arabia’s domestic tourism sector posted robust growth in the first quarter of 2026, underlining the Kingdom’s resilience and the strength of local travel demand despite regional uncertainties.
According to preliminary figures released by the Ministry of Tourism, the number of domestic tourists reached approximately 28.9 million during the January–March period, marking a 16 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Domestic tourism spending also rose, reaching SR34.7 billion (about $9.25 billion), up 8 percent year-on-year. The ministry attributed the increase to sustained demand and the sector’s ability to adapt to shifting regional dynamics.
Overall, the total number of tourists—both domestic and international—was estimated at around 37.2 million in the first quarter, with combined tourism expenditure hitting SR82.7 billion.
Hospitality indicators further reflected strong performance. Average occupancy rates across tourist accommodation facilities stood at 59 percent, with Madinah recording the highest rate at 82 percent. Makkah followed at 60 percent, while Jeddah registered 59 percent.
Seasonal travel during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr also contributed significantly to the surge. Around 10 million domestic tourists traveled during the holiday period, a 14 percent increase from a year earlier, with spending reaching SR10.2 billion, up 5 percent.
Popular leisure destinations, particularly along the Red Sea coast and in Jeddah, saw heightened activity. A promotional campaign launched by the Saudi Tourism Authority under the slogan “Eid Mubarak with You” played a key role, offering tourism packages in partnership with private sector operators. Some resorts reported full occupancy during the peak period.
Officials said these indicators demonstrate the sector’s resilience, supported by diverse tourism offerings and strong domestic demand, helping maintain stability and sustain growth momentum.
In a parallel development, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to regional cooperation in tourism during a virtual meeting of Gulf tourism ministers held on April 8 under the framework of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The meeting, attended by Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb, focused on addressing regional challenges and strengthening coordination to ensure continued growth and stability in the tourism sector. Participants emphasized enhancing investor confidence, improving readiness, and maintaining seamless travel across Gulf countries through better logistical coordination and air connectivity.
The session also included representatives from the UN World Tourism Organization, who highlighted the importance of international cooperation in supporting the sector’s recovery and long-term sustainability.
Saudi officials noted that the Kingdom’s tourism sector continues to demonstrate adaptability amid evolving regional conditions, positioning it as a key contributor to economic stability across the Gulf. A comprehensive report detailing full first-quarter tourism indicators is expected to be released soon via the ministry’s official platforms.
