Legal notice served to stop illegal sand extraction from riverbed, Bhola

MA Mannan, Bhola: A legal notice has been served to the concerned authorities seeking immediate action to stop illegal sand extraction from the Tentulia River Bed adjacent to Baburhat Launch Ghat in Char Fasson Upazila, Bhola.

Advocate Md. Monirul Islam Mia, a lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and Head of Chambers of Lexzone Law Chambers, sent the notice to the relevant authorities through registered post (A/D) and e-mail on Wednesday March 11 2026.

The notice was issued on behalf of Md. Al Amin Babul, Md. Al Manik, Md. Khalid, Md. Miraj Hossain, Abdul Baset Samim and local resident Md. Ashraful Islam.

According to the notice, several dredgers have been extracting sand illegally from the river for the last few days by installing multiple dredging machines near Baburhat Launch Ghat in Nazrul Nagar union. As a result, the government-constructed riverbank protection dam and concrete blocks in the area are under serious threat, raising the risk of severe river erosion at any time.

It alleged that around seven to eight dredgers are lifting sand from the riverbed every day, creating deep pits and weakening the riverbank protection structure, which may collapse into the river if the activity continues. Cracks have also reportedly developed on the road and pontoon area near the launch ghat.

The notice further said that illegal sand extraction is causing environmental damage to the river and destroying the habitat of aquatic animals. Local fishermen may face livelihood risks as breeding grounds of different fish species, particularly hilsa, could be affected due to the ongoing dredging activities.

The notice urged the authorities to take immediate steps to stop the extraction and to ensure protection of the riverbank protection project.
