Malaysia envoy meets opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman

Discusses energy crisis and Rohingya issueDiplomatic Correspondent: Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mohd Shuhada Othman paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh’s Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman MP at the latter’s official residence at 29 Minto Road in Dhaka on Thursday morning.The meeting, held at around 10:30am, focused on a range of issues of mutual interest to Bangladesh and Malaysia, with the two sides holding what was described as an open and cordial exchange of views.The discussions highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries and stressed the need to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.During the meeting, High Commissioner Suhada Osman praised the role of Jamaat-e-Islami as an opposition party in Bangladesh’s parliament, according to information released following the meeting.The ongoing energy crisis in Bangladesh was also discussed, including the potential role Malaysia could play in helping Bangladesh address its energy needs. The two sides also exchanged views in detail on the issue of the repatriation of Rohingyas.Other discussions covered issues relating to the mutual interests, development and progress of both countries.The participants expressed hope that the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia would become stronger in the coming days and that cooperation between the two countries would continue to expand across different sectors.The Malaysian High Commissioner was accompanied by the embassy’s First Secretary Faiez bin Mohammad Mokhtar and Hazwan bin Hasnol.Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s foreign affairs adviser Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman MP and a member of the Opposition Leader’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee, Ali Ahmad Mabrur, were also present at the meeting.
