Prime Minister congratulates Khalilur on his election as UNGA President
Bangladesh has achieved a major diplomatic milestone as Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman was elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), securing the prestigious position after defeating a rival candidate from Cyprus in a vote held at UN Headquarters in New York.
The election marks a significant moment for Bangladesh on the global stage, reflecting what officials described as growing international confidence in the country’s constructive role in advancing multilateralism, sustainable development, peace, and global cooperation.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman congratulated Dr. Rahman on his election, calling it a matter of national pride and a reflection of Bangladesh’s increasing contribution and credibility in global affairs. In a message posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that the newly elected UNGA President would “proudly represent Bangladesh and forge connectivity, dialogue, and cooperation in addressing multilateral, shared challenges.”
“This achievement reflects Bangladesh’s increasing contribution and credibility on the global stage,” the Prime Minister noted, adding best wishes for Dr. Rahman’s success in his new responsibility.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured the post following a competitive election against the candidate nominated by Cyprus. His victory is being viewed as a notable diplomatic success for Bangladesh, reinforcing its standing within the 193-member United Nations system.
The President of the UN General Assembly presides over sessions of the world body’s highest deliberative forum, guiding discussions on key international issues and setting the tone for global debates on pressing challenges.
Observers say Dr. Rahman’s election underscores Bangladesh’s expanding role in global diplomacy and its engagement in fostering dialogue and cooperation across nations on shared international priorities.
