Desk Report: Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of 10 tourists in a devastating fire at Tuptup Resto and Resort on the Inani Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar, demanding an impartial investigation, justice for those responsible and stronger safety measures at tourist destinations across the country.
In
a joint condolence statement issued on Saturday, the organisation’s Central
President Nurul Islam and Secretary General Sibgatullah prayed for the eternal
peace of the deceased and conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved
families.
According
to the statement, media reports indicated that two university students from
Dhaka University and Jagannath University, along with family members, were
among those killed in the fire. The leaders expressed concern that the death
toll could rise further.
They
said the tragedy had caused irreparable loss to the affected families and
raised serious questions about the safety arrangements at the country’s tourist
destinations.
Citing
media reports, the Chhatra Shibir leaders alleged that the wooden resort had
been operating without proper legal approval. They called for an investigation
into how the establishment continued to operate despite alleged shortcomings in
firefighting equipment, emergency exits and other essential safety measures.
The
leaders said the authorities concerned must be held accountable for any failure
to ensure the safety of tourists. They also expressed concern over the
prolonged fire and the effectiveness of the response to the blaze at Cox’s
Bazar, one of Bangladesh’s most important tourist destinations.
They
demanded an immediate, fair and impartial investigation to establish the actual
cause of the fire and identify those responsible for operating the resort
without the necessary approvals or failing to ensure adequate safety measures.
The
organisation also urged the government to bring the responsible resort owners
and relevant authorities to justice, ensure accountability for any negligence
and provide appropriate compensation to the families of the victims.
It
further called for advanced medical treatment for seriously injured tourists
who remain hospitalised.
Emphasising
the need to prevent similar tragedies, the Chhatra Shibir leaders urged the
government to establish a modern, coordinated system of monitoring and
regulation for tourist facilities nationwide.
They
called for strict enforcement of licensing requirements, compliance with fire
safety regulations, regular inspections of hotels and resorts, and better
coordination among the agencies responsible for emergency response.
The
leaders stressed that ensuring the lives and safety of tourists was the responsibility
of the authorities concerned. They said effective oversight and accountability
were essential to prevent such devastating incidents from recurring at the
country’s tourist destinations.
