Pakistan High Commission holds seminar marking Nawab Sir Salimullah Bahadur’s 155th birth anniversary

MM Rahmatullah: The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka on Wednesday organised a seminar titled “The Legacy of the Nawab: An Ode to the Life and Times of Sir Salimullah Bahadur” to commemorate the 155th birth anniversary of Nawab Sir Salimullah Bahadur and honour his enduring contributions as a statesman, philanthropist, educationist and a pioneering figure in the political awakening of Muslims in South Asia.

The event brought together prominent academics, historians, researchers, media personalities and distinguished members of the Nawab family, including Nawabzada Khwaja Samiullah Askari, the great-grandson of Nawab Sir Salimullah Bahadur.

In his welcome address, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Haider, paid tribute to Nawab Salimullah’s visionary leadership and public service, describing him as a key figure in the political awakening of Muslims in the subcontinent. He said Nawab Salimullah’s efforts laid the foundation for the struggle for political rights that eventually led to the creation of Pakistan.

The High Commissioner highlighted Nawab Salimullah’s historic role in facilitating the establishment of the All-India Muslim League in Dhaka in 1906 and underscored his lasting contributions to education, public welfare and institutional development.

The seminar featured presentations by several distinguished speakers who examined various aspects of Nawab Salimullah’s life and legacy.

Dr. Mohammad Alamgir of the Asian University of Bangladesh traced the history of the Nawabs of Dhaka and discussed Nawab Salimullah’s leadership during a transformative period in Bengal’s history.

Prof. Nahid Afrose Kabir of BRAC University spoke on his pioneering contributions to education in East Bengal, noting that his vision and philanthropy helped bring about far-reaching social transformation and continue to inspire future generations.

Zafar Sobhan, former Editor of Dhaka Tribune and Editor of CounterPoint, reflected on Nawab Salimullah’s role in shaping Muslim political thought and his vision for political representation and collective advancement of Muslims across the subcontinent.

Nawabzada Khwaja Samiullah Askari shared personal reflections on his great-grandfather’s enduring legacy and emphasised the importance of upholding his ideals of public service, education and responsible leadership.

At the conclusion of the seminar, the High Commissioner presented souvenirs to the speakers in recognition of their contributions.

A photo exhibition featuring rare photographs and archival materials depicting the life, achievements and lasting legacy of Nawab Sir Salimullah Bahadur was also organised on the occasion.

Special prayers were offered for the departed soul of Nawab Sir Salimullah Bahadur.
