Golam Mostofa, Special Correspondent: A local cultural and social organization has demanded the immediate arrest of an accused teacher in a sexual harassment case involving female students of a college in Sirajganj's Tarash upazila, expressing concern over the lack of progress in the investigation more than a month after the case was filed.
The demand was raised at a press conference organized by Bihanga Cultural Council at the Upazila Public Library hall on Saturday morning.
Presenting a written statement, the organization's founding director, Md. Badrul Amin Sohag, alleged that despite the passage of over a month since the filing of the case, law enforcement agencies have yet to arrest the main accused, Jahurul Islam Khokon, a lecturer in the Sociology Department of Bishamdanga Girls' School and College.
Sohag urged the authorities to ensure the swift arrest of the accused so that the legal process can proceed without further delay. At the same time, he emphasized that the investigation must remain impartial and that no innocent teacher should be implicated in the case.
Earlier, the college administration took disciplinary measures against three teachers—lecturer Jahurul Islam Khokon, assistant teacher Bikash Sarkar, and Sujan Kumar Mahato—following allegations of sexual harassment involving female students of the institution.
Speaking on the progress of the investigation, Md. Saiful Islam Khan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Raiganj Circle), said the prime accused is currently outside the area. He added that police are making every possible effort to locate and arrest him.
Meanwhile, Nusrat Jahan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and president of the governing body of Bishamdanga Girls' School and College, said the investigation report has already been submitted to the relevant education board. She noted that the board has yet to communicate its decision regarding the matter.
The incident has drawn significant attention in the locality, with residents and civil society representatives calling for a transparent investigation, timely legal action, and stronger safeguards to ensure the safety and dignity of students in educational institutions.
