Desk Report: The newly established headquarters of
the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) was formally inaugurated
in Islamabad, marking a significant step toward strengthening regional economic
collaboration among South Asian nations.
The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Dr.
Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs,
who highlighted the importance of strengthening regional cooperation in trade
and commerce.
A high-level business delegation from Bangladesh
attended the event, led by Md. Jashim Uddin, the outgoing President of SAARC
CCI. The delegation included prominent business leaders representing a wide
range of sectors such as plastics, food and beverages, construction materials,
media, banking, textiles, pharmaceuticals, insurance, leather, and cargo
services.
During the event proceedings, participants
highlighted the urgent need for deeper economic integration within South Asia.
Speakers stressed that simplifying trade policies, eliminating existing
barriers, and empowering private sector stakeholders are crucial steps toward
unlocking the region’s vast economic potential.
Business leaders also noted that enhanced regional
cooperation could significantly boost intra-regional trade, create employment
opportunities, and foster sustainable growth across SAARC member states.
The establishment of the SAARC CCI headquarters in
Islamabad is being viewed as a strategic move to facilitate closer coordination
among business communities in the region and to promote a more unified economic
agenda.
Analysts believe that such initiatives, if
supported by consistent policy reforms and political will, could transform
South Asia into a more dynamic and competitive economic bloc on the global
stage.
