Zakir Hossain, Pirojpur: An attack was carried out in Zianagar upazila, Pirojpur, in an attempt to evict a physically disabled youth’s family from their homestead. The youth, his mother, and his wife were injured in the incident. The attack took place on Saturday afternoon, May 2, in West Charbaleshwar village of the upazila.
According to local sources, physically disabled Fazlu Bepari, 40, son of
Abdul Kuddus Bepari of the same village, recently built a house on land
inherited from his grandmother with support from a private humanitarian
organization. It is alleged that his uncle Lokman Bepari, aunt Khadiza Begum,
and cousin Zafar Bepari, along with 25 to 30 others, claimed ownership of the
land and attempted to evict Fazlu’s family.
The victim’s family alleged that on Saturday afternoon the accused arrived
in a group armed with sticks and tried to vandalize their house and force them
out. When Fazlu Bepari and his mother Fazila Begum, 55, resisted, they were
attacked. Later, when Fazlu’s wife Monira Begum, 30, came forward, she was also
beaten. All three sustained injuries.
Hearing their screams, locals rushed to the scene and the attackers fled.
The injured were then taken to hospital. After primary treatment, they returned
home.
Fazlu Bepari said he has long suffered from physical disability and liver
disease, and his left leg is almost non-functional. After years of financial
hardship and living in others’ houses, he finally managed to build a home on
his own land. “We are helpless people. We built a house on our own land. But
now our own relatives are attacking us to evict us,” he said.
Fazlu Bepari filed a written complaint with Zianagar Police Station on
Saturday night.
Local resident Mosharraf Bepari said, “Fazlu is an extremely helpless
disabled man. They built a house on their own land. Action should be taken
quickly against the attackers.”
Locals expressed outrage over the incident and demanded exemplary punishment
for those responsible and security for the victim’s family. They also urged
affluent members of society to come forward and support the family.
Zianagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mohabbat Khan said, “We
have received the complaint. The matter will be investigated and necessary
legal action will be taken.”
