Md Tanju Ahmed, Raipur (Lakshmipur): Police have recovered the slit-throat bodies of three members of the same family from a building in Gangpara, Ward 3, Denayetpur area of Raipur municipality on Thursday morning. A fourth victim died on the way to Dhaka for treatment. The deceased are Shahinur Begum, 38, her eldest daughter Chhayma, 21, college student Iqra Akter, 18, and youngest daughter Shifa Akter, 9. Their permanent home is in Lotia village under Homna Police Station, Cumilla district. The family was living in the rented house in Raipur. According to police and local sources, Shahinur’s husband, Md. Kamal, died from electrocution several years ago. Since then she had been living with her three daughters and a son in the house. On Thursday morning, the four women were critically injured after being attacked with a sharp weapon by an intruder. Doctors at the hospital declared Shahinur, Iqra and Shifa dead. Chhayma was sent to Dhaka in critical condition but died on the way. After the attack, locals caught a mobile fruit vendor named Zahir Hosen as he tried to flee the house. He was beaten by an enraged mob. Critically injured, he was taken to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital where he also died during treatment. Police have identified the suspect as Antar Majumder, son of Kartik Mojumder. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Raipur Circle, Md. Abdur Rashid said, “Three people have been killed in the incident. One was sent to Dhaka in critical condition. A suspected youth was beaten by the public. The scene and surrounding area are now under control. We are investigating the motive and whether anyone else was involved.” Lakshmipur Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Tarek said, “A horrific incident occurred in Raipur. Three members of one family — the mother and two daughters — were killed. Another daughter was sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Locals caught the accused, Antar Majumder, red-handed and beat him. Police rescued him and sent him to Sadar Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.” A neighbor said she heard screaming and went to the house. “The screaming stopped and there was no answer. I saw a man go toward the kitchen through the window. I thought he might be a relative. He told me he came to fix a bathroom tap and shut the door. I became suspicious because he appeared to be naked. I raised an alarm and he tried to escape via the roof. When people entered, they found blood on the floor and the four family members lying in pools of blood. Police were then called.” Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact motive behind the killings.
