Bangladesh Students’ Party condemns evictions of Bengali Muslims in India’s Assam, demands international probe
Online Desk: Bangladesh Students’ Party has expressed deep concern and strong protest over the alleged forced eviction of minority Bengali Muslim families from forest areas in India’s Assam state, calling on the international human rights community to investigate the incidents and ensure the safety of minorities. In a statement, the student organisation said eviction drives carried out by the Indian government since October 18 in Nagaon, Hojai and Golaghat districts had reportedly displaced around 1,100 families and led to the demolition of 10 mosques. The organisation said minority Bengali Muslim communities had been living in the Lutumari forest area under the Taungya system since the colonial period. It expressed concern over the displacement of these communities and the destruction of places of worship.Bangladesh Students’ Party also referred to an earlier eviction drive in the region in November last year, which it said had affected around 1,700 families. According to the statement, nearly 19,000 families had been affected by eviction operations in Assam during the past decade of rule by India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).Condemning what it described as anti-minority activities by the Indian government, the organisation urged international human rights bodies to conduct an impartial investigation into the reported incidents. It also called for effective measures to protect the rights, security and dignity of minority communities in India, stressing the need to prevent further displacement and ensure that affected families receive appropriate protection. The statement comes amid continuing concerns over the treatment of minority communities and the humanitarian consequences of eviction operations in Assam. The reported displacement of families and destruction of mosques raise questions about the protection of vulnerable communities, access to shelter and the preservation of religious sites.Bangladesh Students’ Party urged the international community to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate steps to ensure accountability and safeguard the fundamental rights of those affected.
