Special Correspondent: Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has strongly condemned what it described as a "brutal and disgraceful attack" on leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) during the party's "July March" programme in Habiganj on Tuesday. The student organization also called for immediate disciplinary and legal action against those allegedly involved in the violence.In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, Shibir President Nurul Islam and Secretary General Sibgatullah denounced the incident, alleging that members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, carried out the attack on the peaceful political programme.According to the statement, senior NCP leaders, including Sarjis Alam and Nasiruddin Patwary, were among those targeted during the march. Shibir claimed that attackers vandalized vehicles belonging to the NCP's media team, damaged several cars used by journalists, and caused extensive destruction to government property inside the district Circuit House. The organization further alleged that journalists were assaulted, while their mobile phones and cameras were snatched, leaving several media personnel injured.Shibir leaders said that every political party has the democratic right to organize peaceful programmes in the political environment that has emerged following the July uprising. They argued that attacks on such events threaten democratic values and undermine the spirit of political coexistence.The organization also linked the Habiganj incident to what it described as a pattern of political violence across the country. It referred to an earlier incident in Jhenaidah, where NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwary was allegedly attacked with eggs after Friday prayers, and another incident in Savar, where an explosion reportedly disrupted an NCP rally following a pre-scheduled march, injuring several activists.According to the statement, these incidents indicate attempts by "a particular group" to destabilize the country's political environment through intimidation and violence.Shibir further alleged that, since the fall of what it termed the "fascist regime," BNP and some of its affiliated organizations have increasingly displayed aggressive behavior, including alleged involvement in political violence, extortion, unlawful occupation, and other criminal activities. The student body claimed that such actions run counter to the aspirations of the July uprising and threaten national unity.The organization urged the BNP's central leadership to identify and take strict organizational action against those allegedly responsible for the Habiganj attack as well as previous incidents of political violence. It also called on the authorities to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators under the country's existing laws.No immediate response from the BNP or Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal regarding Shibir's allegations was available at the time of filing this report.
