Mizanur Rahman: The government will allocate special development funds for constituencies where the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was defeated in the election, Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez has said.He stressed that electoral outcomes would not determine access to development, adding that no area would be neglected simply because it elected representatives from the opposition.Speaking as the chief guest at a contract signing ceremony on Tuesday in Chapainawabganj's Shibganj municipality, Dr. Parvez said the initiative would cover not only Shibganj but also other constituencies across northern Bangladesh and from Rangpur to Khulna where the BNP failed to secure victory."Our goal is to ensure balanced development across the country. People living in constituencies where the BNP was defeated will not be deprived in any way. Instead, these areas will receive special attention through targeted development programmes," he said.The event marked the signing of an agreement between Shibganj Municipality and the Netherlands-based development organisation SNV to operate solid waste and faecal sludge management services through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.Dr. Parvez said there was "no question of punishing" people living in constituencies represented by opposition lawmakers. He noted that government welfare initiatives—including Family Cards, Farmers' Cards and other citizen-focused programmes—would continue to reach residents of those areas without discrimination.He also pledged necessary infrastructure development to improve public services and living standards in underserved constituencies.Highlighting urban management, the Prime Minister's special assistant said transforming Shibganj into a clean, modern and livable municipality would directly benefit its residents. He urged all stakeholders to work together, regardless of political affiliation, to develop Shibganj into a model municipality.The programme was chaired by Shibganj Municipality Administrator and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mazharul Islam.Among others, SNV Water Sector Leader Shahidul Islam addressed the function. Assistant Engineer Sujoy Kumar of the Department of Public Health Engineering and officials from various government agencies were also present.The agreement is expected to strengthen municipal waste management through greater private sector participation, aiming to improve environmental sustainability and public health in the municipality.
