Elderly man dies after being run over by train on railway trrack in Chuadanga

Chuadanga Correspondent: A 55-year-old man was killed after being run over by a train while he was reportedly asleep on a railway track in Gaidghat area of Chuadanga Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Sher Ali, son of late Mofiz Uddin of Uttarpara in Gaidghat village. He was a father of two daughters and a son.

The accident occurred around 5:30pm at Gaidhghat Railpara in Makhalkanga Union, according to local sources.

Locals said Sher Ali went to a nearby field in the afternoon to graze his buffaloes. As he was physically unwell, he apparently lay down with his head on the railway track and fell asleep.

Later, the Kapotaksha Express, travelling from Rajshahi towards Khulna, passed over him, killing him on the spot, locals said.

Ashraful Islam, a local union parishad member, said Sher Ali had been suffering from physical illness. However, due to his family's poor financial condition, he had to continue working and went out to graze buffaloes despite being unwell.

Jagdish, sub-inspector and in-charge of the Chuadanga Government Railway Police (GRP) outpost, said Sher Ali had gone to graze buffaloes and apparently fell asleep with his head on the railway line.

He said the man was killed after being struck by the train.

As the family did not file any complaint regarding the incident, police allowed the body to be handed over to the family for burial, the GRP official added.

The tragic incident has drawn attention to the hardships faced by economically vulnerable families, where illness often cannot keep elderly or physically weak members away from work.
