Desk Report: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned the reported involvement of a large number of men and women in alleged immoral activities and the recovery of narcotics from a house owned by a serving Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Bangladesh Police.
The
party has demanded a departmental investigation into Additional DIG Abdullah Al
Zahir, the reported owner of the house, and exemplary action against those
found responsible.
In
a statement issued on Tuesday, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and
Secretary of its Publicity and Media Department, Advocate Ahsanul Mahbub
Zubair, described the incident as deeply disturbing and shameful.
He
said the reported arrangement for immoral activities and drug consumption at a
house owned by a senior police official raised serious concerns about the country's
law and order situation and could encourage social crimes.
Zubair
said the Detective Branch (DB) of police had arrested 84 men and women in
connection with the incident on Tuesday. A large quantity of prohibited
narcotics was also reportedly recovered from the house, according to the
statement.
Demanding
strict punishment for those involved, the Jamaat leader called for a fair and
impartial investigation to identify everyone connected with the incident,
including those allegedly operating behind the scenes or patronising such
criminal activities.
Expressing
concern over the spread of drugs across the country, he said narcotics had
reached both urban areas and rural communities amid a deteriorating law and
order situation.
The
reported incident at a house owned by a senior police officer had created
considerable concern and anxiety among the public, he added.
Zubair
urged the government, all law enforcement agencies and citizens to work
together to dismantle drug syndicates and prevent the spread of narcotics.
He
also reiterated his demand for a departmental inquiry into Additional DIG
Abdullah Al Zahir and exemplary measures against him, subject to the findings
of the investigation.
The
allegations and the circumstances surrounding the incident require proper
investigation. The house owner's response and further details of the police
investigation were not included in the statement.
