Special Correspondent: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said the government "will not survive" if it takes a stance against the July movement, adding that its aspirations would be realized through a referendum verdict. He made the remarks on Monday at a seminar held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium in Kakrail, Dhaka.
The seminar titled "Government is against the referendum verdict: Country is facing crisis" was organized by an 11-party alliance with Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque in the chair. National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, also chief whip of the opposition, attended the event as a special guest.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman said his party had already made clear that it did not enter parliament to enjoy privileges, adding that it would only accept what is unavoidable and would avoid unlawful benefits.
He further stated that the party had raised its voice in parliament over issues including the referendum debate, claiming attempts were made to silence them, but that they continued to speak out in the public interest.
Referring to the current parliament as a "July product," he said, "If there is no July, we are also not there. Because July exists, both the government and the opposition exist."
He warned that any move against what he termed the "July aspirations" would not be tolerated, adding that the ongoing movement had already begun and must be carried forward to success.
The Jamaat leader also said the mass uprising was not limited to students or the educated, claiming that a large number of those killed were workers who joined the movement against discrimination and authoritarianism.
He added that the movement was not about sharing power or political gain, but about respecting the verdict of the majority and fulfilling the aspirations of those who died. He further warned against what he described as "political authoritarianism," saying it would not be allowed to continue in Bangladesh.
