Protests at World Bank area: demanding resignation of SDF Chairman, MD

Kallol Ahmed: The World Bank area in the capital witnessed fresh unrest on Monday as employees of the Social Development Foundation (SDF) continued their agitation for the seventh consecutive day, demanding the resignation of Chairman Abdul Majid and Managing Director Nurul Amin.

Under the banner of “SDF Karmachari Oikya Parishad,” officers and staff staged a human chain, demonstration, and sit-in program near the World Bank office. The protest is being led by officials and employees of the Resilience Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Improvement (RELI) project, operated under the Financial Institutions Division and the Ministry of Finance.

After holding successive programs at the SDF central office and in front of the National Press Club, protesters shifted their demonstration to the World Bank premises on Monday to press home their demands.

Speakers at the human chain accused the current chairman and MD of corruption, autocracy, administrative inefficiency, and incompetence.

Abdul Latif, chief coordinator of the movement, said the RELI project has undergone seven mission reviews so far. “While the first six reviews received satisfactory ratings, the latest mission rated the organization as ‘Moderately Unsatisfactory,’” he said.

He claimed the World Bank report highlighted deterioration of the organization’s social work environment and administrative instability, which has sparked intense resentment among officials and employees.

Protesters further alleged that an inexperienced audit cadre official, Nurul Amin, was appointed as MD by bypassing experienced and qualified senior secretaries. “Because the Board of Directors’ chairman himself is from the audit cadre, he disregarded rules and installed his preferred person in the post,” they said.

They also alleged that although SDF’s head office has been shifted to the BNF Bhaban, no signboard has been installed yet. Protesters fear an attempt is underway to merge SDF with BNF and implement a plan for mass layoffs. As part of this process, the administration is concealing information, they claimed.

A large number of officials and employees from the head office as well as various district and cluster offices joined Monday’s human chain. The protesters said their movement will continue until the chairman and MD resign.

They urged the government’s higher authorities to intervene immediately to ensure transparency, accountability, and to protect the organization’s reputation.
