Sports Desk: Cristiano Ronaldo once again etched his name into football folklore after scoring twice in Portugal’s dominant 5–0 victory over Uzbekistan in Houston, extending his legacy with a series of record-breaking milestones that continue to define his extraordinary career.
The 41-year-old forward struck in the 6th and 39th minutes, delivering a commanding response to criticism following a subdued performance in Portugal’s previous draw against DR Congo. His brace not only powered Portugal to the top of Group K with four points from two matches but also marked a historic individual achievement: becoming the oldest player to score twice in a single World Cup match.
Ronaldo’s performance saw him surpass a record previously held by Lionel Messi, who had recently scored a brace at 38 years and 363 days against Austria. At 41 years and 138 days, Ronaldo set a new benchmark for longevity at the highest level of international football.
The match also confirmed another landmark achievement—Ronaldo became the first player in history to score in six separate World Cup tournaments, spanning from 2006 through 2026. Across those editions, he has maintained a remarkable 20-year scoring presence on football’s biggest stage.
Portugal’s victory was completed by goals from Rafael Leão in the 87th minute, a Nuno Mendes strike in the 17th minute, and an own goal from Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov. Despite multiple chances, Ronaldo narrowly missed out on a hat-trick, including a late opportunity denied by Nematov’s save.
From the outset, Portugal displayed greater cohesion and attacking intent. Ronaldo’s opening goal came from a precise João Cancelo assist, showcasing his trademark movement and clinical finishing. His second was a solo effort, finishing calmly after beating the goalkeeper—an emphatic reminder of his enduring sharpness and physical capability at 41.
The performance marked a decisive turnaround for Ronaldo, who had faced scrutiny after Portugal’s earlier draw. Instead of engaging in off-field debate, he responded in the most familiar way—by rewriting records on the pitch.
With this victory, Portugal now lead their group, while Colombia sit second with three points, DR Congo have one, and Uzbekistan remain without a point after two matches.
Ronaldo’s latest feat adds another chapter to a career defined by longevity, resilience, and relentless productivity, reinforcing his status as one of football’s most enduring figures.
