AB Party blames govt failures for deepening economic crisis

Desk Report: Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) Chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju has blamed government failures and mismanagement for worsening the country's economic crisis, warning that rising commodity prices, energy shortages and deteriorating law and order have pushed Bangladesh towards greater uncertainty.

He made the remarks while presiding over a special meeting of the party's Central Editorial Committee at its central office in Dhaka on Monday.

Manju said the government's failure to control rising prices of essential commodities, lack of effective initiatives to address electricity and fuel shortages, and continued deterioration in law and order had compounded public suffering and economic uncertainty.

He also expressed concern over the lack of visible progress in the banking sector and stock market, warning that fresh challenges facing the readymade garment (RMG) industry and the overseas employment sector could have serious consequences for the overall economy.

Referring to the ongoing garment workers' movement over a pay structure, the AB Party chairman cautioned that labour unrest could gradually spread to workers in other professions if the underlying concerns remained unresolved.

Manju further criticised what he described as a lack of government sincerity in running the country with the participation of all stakeholders. At the same time, he observed that the opposition parties had failed to play their expected and effective role due to a lack of experience.

Emphasising the need for national unity, he said both the government and opposition should work together to revive the economy and prevent the resurgence of what he termed "Awami fascism".

He also called for creating an effective political and parliamentary environment in which opposition parties could perform their constitutional responsibilities constructively and responsibly.

The meeting was attended by AB Party Joint General Secretaries Barrister Zubayer Ahmed Bhuiyan, ABM Khalid Hasan, Aminul Islam, Md Altaf Hossain, Shahadatullah Tutul and Barrister Abbas Islam Khan Noman, among other central and local leaders.

Other participants included expatriate welfare affairs secretary Golam Rabbani Raja; Dhaka South Metropolitan Convener Abdul Halim Khokon; Dhaka North Metropolitan Convener Selim Khan; Volunteer Party Convener Kefayet Hossain Tanvir; Student Wing President Mohammad Prince; and Youth Party Member Secretary Hadiuzzaman Khokon.

Several organisational and policy-related office-bearers, including regional organisers from Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Barishal and Khulna, were also present.

The meeting discussed the country's prevailing political and economic situation and the challenges facing the government, opposition and different sectors of the economy.
