Chattogram Bureau: A nearly six-hour blockade of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway and railway line in Sitakunda was withdrawn on Tuesday after Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia assured protesting students of taking prompt action to address their demands following the death of a university student in a road accident.
The students ended their blockade at 4:10pm on November 3 after the DC visited the spot, held discussions with them and assured them that their demands would be addressed within the shortest possible time.
The protests erupted after Maisha Mushfirat, a second-semester student of the English Language and Literature Department at International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC), was killed when a lorry hit a bus in the Kumira area of Sitakunda, causing it to overturn and trap her underneath.
Another student, identified as Raziya, was injured in the accident.
Angry students blocked both the highway and railway line, causing severe traffic congestion and disrupting train services.
Following the incident, the DC contacted Chattogram Medical College Hospital to ensure proper treatment for the injured student. He also spoke to Maisha's father, Didarul Alam, expressing condolences and assuring him of necessary support.
Initially, Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Fakhrul Islam and the officer-in-charge of the local police station visited the scene. However, the students demanded the DC's direct intervention.
The DC subsequently arrived with Police Superintendent Mohammad Masud Alam, District Ansar and VDP Commandant Mohammad Sefaul Hossain, and the university's vice-chancellor and teachers.
After attending Maisha's funeral prayer held on the highway, the DC addressed the protesting students and said he had already contacted the concerned ministry secretary and relevant offices of the Roads and Highways Department.
He assured them that he would formally request the immediate construction of a footbridge near the university's main entrance. He also promised improved road safety measures, action against illegal lorry parking and removal of unauthorised structures beside the railway line.
The police superintendent assured the students that the lorry driver involved in the accident would be brought to justice promptly.
Regarding compensation, the DC said the administration would initiate discussions with the lorry owner to arrange financial assistance for the bereaved family according to its needs. Government assistance would also be considered if necessary.
The students' eight-point demands included filing a case through the university authorities, arresting the driver within 24 hours, taking action against the driver and owner, stopping illegal parking at KDS Depot, constructing a footbridge and ensuring compensation and safe road crossings.
Appealing to the students to consider the suffering of stranded passengers, including patients in ambulances, the DC reiterated his commitment to fulfilling their demands.
Following assurances from the administration and university authorities, the students withdrew the blockade, restoring movement on the highway and railway line.
