Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir on Sunday strongly condemned what it called “unabated terrorism by Chhatra Dal” in educational institutions, demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the “barbaric attack” on students, teachers and Shibir activists at Chattogram Government City College.
Addressing an emergency press conference at an auditorium in the capital, Shibir Central President Nurul Islam alleged that Chhatra Dal activists have been carrying out planned attacks across campuses to destroy the academic environment and silence dissenting voices.
“The brutal assault on teachers, general students and our manpower at Chattogram Government City College is not an isolated incident. It is part of Chhatra Dal’s continued terror that has turned campuses into safe havens for armed cadres,” Nurul Islam told reporters.
He claimed that attackers, backed by “a vested political quarter,” beat up students indiscriminately, assaulted teachers who tried to intervene, and specifically targeted Shibir-affiliated students, leaving several injured.
“Educational institutions are being held hostage. If the administration and law enforcement agencies fail to arrest and try the attackers immediately, the crisis will deepen,” the Shibir president warned, adding that the government must bear responsibility for any further deterioration of campus security.
Nurul Islam announced a series of protest programs, including campus-based demonstrations and submission of memorandums to educational authorities, to press home their four-point demand: arrest of the attackers, ensuring safety of students and teachers, banning “terrorist student politics,” and restoration of a congenial academic atmosphere.
He urged all student organisations, guardians and civil society to raise their voices against campus violence. “We do not want a single student to be injured anymore. Classrooms must not turn into battlegrounds,” he said.
No immediate reaction from Chhatra Dal or the college authorities was available at the time of filing this report.
The press conference was attended by Shibir’s central and city leaders, injured students from Chattogram, and several teachers, organizers said.
