Khelafat Majlis urges swift implementation of referendum verdict

MM Rahmatullah: Khelafat Majlis has urged the government to take prompt and effective steps to implement the verdict of the referendum. The call was made by speakers at a roundtable discussion titled “Our Responsibilities in Implementing the Referendum Verdict”, organized by the organization.

The meeting was held on Wednesday morning at the Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club, with Maulana Abdul Basit Azad, Ameer of Khelafat Majlis, presiding. The keynote speaker was presented by the organization’s Secretary General, Dr. Ahmad Abdul Qader.

Speakers stated that although the responsibility for implementing the referendum verdict lies with the National Parliament and the Constitutional Reform Council, the public has become frustrated with the current activities of Parliament. They noted that delays in forming the Constitutional Reform Council after members of Parliament took their oath, along with the cancellation of 11 vital ordinances, have deepened the crisis.

They alleged that the government is showing reluctance to implement the referendum verdict by misinterpreting the Constitution. According to the speakers, the Constitution clearly states that all state power originates from the people, and public opinion expressed through a referendum holds the highest moral authority.

From the roundtable, demands were raised to directly enforce the “July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order-2025,” to quickly form the Constitutional Reform Council, and to complete the reform process within the stipulated timeframe. Emphasis was also placed on keeping the “Referendum Ordinance-2025” in effect.

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar was also speaks at the event.

The speakers warned that if the referendum verdict is not implemented, the public may be compelled to take to the streets again in mass protest.

Representatives from various political parties, professional organizations and civil society attended the meeting and expressed their views on the issue.
