Emergency Services vs. Traffic Chaos: A Problem We Must Solve Now

Emergency Services vs. Traffic Chaos: A Problem We Must Solve Now

Introduction:

In today’s urban life, daily traffic congestion, narrow roads, and unplanned urbanization have become major sources of suffering for ordinary people. However, the situation becomes far more alarming when fire service vehicles, ambulances, or police patrol units fail to reach their destinations on time. A delay of just a few minutes can often mean the difference between life and death.

Therefore, ensuring separate roads or dedicated corridors for emergency services in every important area of the city has now become a necessity of time.

The Current Situation in Bangladesh

Every year, Bangladesh suffers significant financial losses and casualties due to fire incidents. For example—

Statistics of 2025

* Total fire incidents: 27,059

* Average daily incidents: approximately 75

* Deaths: 85

* Injured: 267

* Financial loss: approximately BDT 569 crore

Statistics of 2024

* Total fire incidents: 26,659

* Average daily incidents: 73

* Financial loss: BDT 446 crore 27 lakh 28 thousand 697

* Deaths: 140

* Injured: 341

Statistics of 2023

* Total fire incidents: 27,624

* Average daily incidents: 77

* Financial loss: BDT 792 crore 36 lakh 82 thousand 14

* Deaths: 102

Major Causes of Fire Incidents

Electrical short circuits, burning cigarette butts, kitchen stoves, and gas line leakages.

These statistics clearly demonstrate the massive damage that occurs every year—much of which is further intensified simply because fire service vehicles fail to reach the scene on time.

Tragic Realities Beyond Fire

Beyond fire incidents, there are countless silent tragedies happening on our roads.

We have witnessed numerous patients and expectant mothers losing their lives inside ambulances. We have heard the heartbreaking cries of sisters losing their injured brothers, mothers mourning their children, and helpless children watching their fathers fade away. Many have seen their mothers struggling for breath right before their eyes—only because they could not reach the hospital in time.

If there had been an effective alternative road system for emergency vehicles, the people of Bangladesh would not have had to endure such immense suffering, nor would the pain of losing loved ones be so unbearable.

Another Critical Issue

Whenever the Prime Minister, President, ministers, or important foreign dignitaries travel on the roads, strict security measures often halt traffic for long periods—bringing public life to a standstill.

An alternative road system is essential to resolve this recurring problem as well.

Other Key Importance of Emergency Roads

* Life-Saving Necessity:

    In cases of accidents, fire outbreaks, heart attacks, or childbirth emergencies, timely arrival of an ambulance can save a life. If fire service vehicles remain stuck in traffic, the damage multiplies.

* Efficient Urban Management:

    A specialized emergency road would not only assist emergency vehicles but also ensure faster police control and post-accident rescue operations, ultimately reducing traffic congestion.

* International Examples:

    In most developed cities around the world, separate lanes or alternative roads are reserved for emergency vehicles. Unfortunately, Bangladesh has yet to take strong initiatives in this regard.

* Public Safety and Citizens’ Rights:

    Timely access to emergency services is a fundamental right of citizens. When fire service or ambulance vehicles fail to arrive on time, people’s safety is directly at risk.

Appeal to the Government

We humbly urge the honorable government and relevant authorities to—

* Allocate dedicated roads or lanes for emergency services in every city and major urban area

* Include designated pathways for fire service and ambulances in all new infrastructure projects

* Declare certain existing narrow roads as “Emergency Corridors” at the very least

* Ensure strict traffic control and raise public awareness so that these routes remain unobstructed

Conclusion

When it comes to saving lives and protecting property, even a few minutes can make the greatest difference. Therefore, immediate and effective steps must be taken to establish alternative roads or emergency corridors in every city across the country.

The government’s prompt action will prove one simple truth—

human lives come first.
