One month on, attackers of journalist remain at large in Gazipur

Sparking Local Outrage

Gazipur Correspondent: A month after journalist Mosleh Uddin Bachchu was brutally attacked in the BK Bari area of Mirzapur Union, Sadar Upazila, police have yet to arrest any of the accused, triggering anger and frustration among the victim’s family and local media workers.

Bachchu, General Secretary of the Dhaka Press Club, said a case was filed at Joydebpur Police Station immediately after the incident. However, police have shown no visible progress since. He alleged that the accused are moving freely in the area while no effective steps have been taken to arrest them.

Attempted murder and extortion demand: According to details, on 17 April, while Bachchu was supervising construction work at his residence, a group of armed assailants led by local men Goni Mia, Mofazzal Hossain, and Masud demanded Tk 500,000 in extortion. When he refused, the attackers allegedly beat him severely with iron rods, sticks, and hammers in an attempt to kill him.

Bachchu said he and his family are now living in fear and feel extremely insecure.

When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Joydebpur Police Station Nayan Kar said police operations to arrest the accused are ongoing. “We will be able to bring them under the law soon,” he stated.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police said he has been in constant contact with the police station since the incident and that “maximum effort is underway to apprehend the accused.”

The delay in arrests has heightened concerns among journalists in Gazipur over the safety of media workers and the handling of cases involving attacks on the press.
