Chhatra Shibir expresses grief over road accidents killing 38 in two days

CN Desk: Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has expressed deep shock and concern over the deaths of 38 people in road accidents across the country in two days, including 17 killed when an iron rod-laden truck overturned near the eastern end of the Jamuna Bridge.

In a joint statement issued today, Monday, May 25, 2026, Chhatra Shibir’s Central President Nurul Islam and Secretary General Sibgatullah conveyed their condolences.

According to the statement, the accident on the Dhaka-Tangail highway near the eastern end of the Jamuna Bridge on Monday left 17 dead and at least 10 injured. On Sunday, another 21 people were killed in road accidents in 11 districts across the country.

“Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, the country’s highways have once again turned into death traps,” the leaders said. “Due to the lack of effective administrative monitoring and the unhindered movement of unfit and unauthorized vehicles, the joy of people returning home turns into mourning every year. This continued chain of road accidents is extremely painful.”

Citing previous accident statistics, the leaders noted that during Eid-ul-Fitr, despite government claims of strict monitoring, private estimates showed 351 people were killed and over 1,046 injured on the country’s roads within just 15 days. “The concerned authorities have not learned any lesson from that horrific record. Ensuring the safety of life and property is a fundamental responsibility of the state, but the administration’s extreme negligence in fulfilling this duty is evident everywhere,” they added.

The leaders prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased, expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. They also urged the authorities to conduct a fair investigation into the incidents and take effective measures to prevent further tragedies.
