It is also a testament to the diplomatic vision and strategic foresight of the Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, whose leadership has sought to position Bangladesh as an increasingly active and constructive participant in international diplomacy.The United Nations General Assembly remains the most representative global forum, bringing together nearly every sovereign nation of the world under a common platform. Emerging from the devastation of war in 1971, the country faced enormous economic, political, and social challenges. Yet through resilience, determination, and gradual institution-building, Bangladesh has transformed itself into one of the developing world’s notable success stories. Alongside impressive economic progress and social development, the country has steadily expanded its diplomatic footprint across the globe.Today, Bangladesh is recognized as one of the world’s leading contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations. It has emerged as a powerful advocate for climate justice, consistently highlighting the plight of vulnerable nations disproportionately affected by climate change. It has also played an active role in promoting the interests of developing and least-developed countries within multilateral forums. These contributions have strengthened Bangladesh’s reputation as a responsible and constructive member of the international community.The foundations of Bangladesh’s international engagement were laid over decades. Among the important chapters in this journey was the period of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman, whose pragmatic approach to foreign policy expanded Bangladesh’s diplomatic horizons. By strengthening relations with the Muslim world, South Asia, East Asia, and Western nations, his administration sought to establish Bangladesh as an active participant in global affairs. The emphasis on national interest, diversified partnerships, and international cooperation helped create a diplomatic framework that subsequent governments continued to build upon.For this reason, the present achievement should not be viewed as an isolated event. Diplomatic successes are rarely the result of a single moment or a single administration. Rather, they are the culmination of years of relationship-building, sustained engagement, professional diplomacy, and the collective efforts of state institutions. At the same time, the role of the current government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bangladesh’s diplomatic corps in securing this outcome deserves due recognition and appreciation.Yet it would be a mistake to view this accomplishment solely through the lens of national pride. It is equally the beginning of a profound responsibility.The international community today confronts a range of interconnected crises. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, instability in the Middle East, climate change, food insecurity, energy challenges, debt burdens, technological inequality, and growing geopolitical tensions have created an increasingly complex global environment. In such a world, leadership within the United Nations requires not only diplomatic skill but also wisdom, balance, and a commitment to the broader interests of humanity.Bangladesh’s election to this position presents a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to addressing these challenges. The country can help strengthen dialogue between developed and developing nations, advocate for equitable economic arrangements, and promote cooperation in addressing shared global problems.Particularly significant is the continuing Rohingya crisis. For nearly a decade, Bangladesh has carried an enormous humanitarian burden by providing shelter to more than a million forcibly displaced Rohingya people. While the country has earned widespread international praise for its generosity, a durable solution to the crisis remains elusive. The enhanced visibility and influence associated with this new role could provide Bangladesh with additional opportunities to keep the issue high on the international agenda and mobilize greater global support for a sustainable resolution.Likewise, Bangladesh stands among the nations most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change despite contributing very little to the problem itself. Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation pose significant threats to its future development. Through its leadership position, Bangladesh can continue to champion the cause of climate-vulnerable nations and advocate for greater climate financing, adaptation support, and technology transfer.The opportunity extends beyond specific national concerns. Bangladesh can serve as a stronger voice for developing countries on issues such as global economic justice, fair trade, sustainable development, debt relief, and inclusive growth. At a time when many nations of the Global South seek greater representation and influence in international decision-making, Bangladesh has the chance to play a constructive and unifying role.Nevertheless, international recognition alone does not guarantee lasting influence. The strongest foundation of diplomatic success remains a nation’s domestic strength. Good governance, democratic institutions, accountability, the rule of law, economic stability, and investment in human capital are essential ingredients of sustainable international prestige. Countries earn respect abroad when they demonstrate strength, stability, and progress at home.The election of Dr. Khalilur Rahman therefore represents both a culmination and a beginning—a culmination of Bangladesh’s long diplomatic journey and the beginning of a new chapter of responsibility and opportunity.
