MM Rahmatullah: BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for an end to the ongoing debate over the implementation of the July Charter, urging all political forces to resolve differences through dialogue and work collectively toward constitutional reforms.Speaking at the July Martyr Journalist Honouring Ceremony, organised by the National Editors Council at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital, Fakhrul alleged that attempts were being made to create confusion surrounding the July Charter.He stressed that the opportunity created through the July Movement should be utilised to build a new state founded on justice, accountability and democratic values."There should no longer be any controversy over the implementation of the July Charter. The issues can and should be resolved through constructive discussions," Fakhrul said, while calling on opposition parties to participate in the Constitution Amendment Committee.He expressed confidence that Bangladesh could establish what he described as a "state of justice," adding that the government was working to implement commitments previously pledged by the BNP.The BNP leader also underscored the importance of parliamentary dialogue in introducing constitutional and institutional reforms that would prevent future generations from resorting to violent political movements."We must create a political system through parliamentary discussions where the next generation will not have to choose the path of violence again," he said.Fakhrul urged opposition lawmakers to move beyond what he termed a habit of opposing every government initiative, saying constructive engagement would better serve the country's democratic transition.Referring to what he described as a culture of flattery and patronage in various institutions, including the media, Fakhrul said Bangladesh needed a fundamental change in institutional culture to strengthen democracy and good governance.He also acknowledged the challenges facing the government, saying the damage caused over the past 16 years could not be undone overnight."It is not possible to cleanse the nation of the accumulated misdeeds of the last 16 years within such a short period," he said. The event was attended by journalists, editors and representatives from various media organisations, who gathered to honour journalists recognised as martyrs during the July Movement.
