Submits resignation letter to  Speaker under Article 50(3) of ConstitutionSpecial Correspondent: Bangladesh’s 22nd President Md. Sahabuddin has resigned from office due to serious health complications. In a letter dated July 24, 2026, addressed to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, he stepped down in accordance with Article 50(3) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.In the resignation letter sent from Bangabhaban, the President stated that he took oath on April 24, 2023 and had carried out his duties with sincerity, honesty, and full allegiance to the Constitution. He recalled the political crisis that emerged after the fall of the previous government on August 5, 2024, following a mass uprising led by students and citizens. To address the constitutional deadlock, he said, he sought an advisory opinion from the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court under Article 106 and subsequently formed an interim government in consultation with political parties. That interim administration later arranged a general election to the National Parliament, after which an elected government assumed office.Citing his deteriorating health, President Sahabuddin disclosed that he is suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney complications. He has previously undergone bypass surgery. He also revealed that he has recently been diagnosed with Autonomic Neuropathy, a condition that causes him to faint occasionally. “Due to the prevalence of these illnesses and resulting physical and mental incapacity, it is no longer possible for me to perform the duties of such an important constitutional post like the President. I require long-term medical treatment,” he wrote in the letter.The President further noted that under the current elected government and with active participation of the opposition in Parliament, democratic practices are continuing and no constitutional crisis has occurred during this period, which he attributed to his “firm and positive role.”Following the resignation, discussions have begun among constitutional experts and political leaders regarding the next steps as per constitutional provisions.Md. Sahabuddin assumed office as President on April 24, 2023.
