Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: Residents of Dattapara in Ward 8 of Sonargaon municipality, Narayanganj, have raised concerns over the operation of several lime-burning factories in the densely populated area, alleging that the facilities are causing smoke, waste and environmental pollution.Some residents have also accused local political figures of using influence to facilitate the businesses. They alleged that Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, general secretary of Sonargaon upazila BNP and a potential candidate for mayor of Sonargaon municipality, has used his political influence in connection with the operation of such businesses.Residents have also raised questions about the ownership of land where one of the factories operates. They claimed that disputes or uncertainty surround the property's ownership, while alleging that the factory continues to operate through the use of influence.Some locals further alleged that discussions have taken place in the area over the alleged collection of financial benefits by using political influence and threatening people with involvement in various cases. However, they could not provide any written or documented evidence to substantiate the claims.During a visit to Dattapara, several residents said the factories had operated in the area for a long time. Some, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that smoke and waste generated during lime burning have affected the surrounding environment.One resident said the smoke and strong odour disrupt normal life whenever workers burn lime. The resident also said some people fear pressure or intimidation if they raise objections to the factories.Residents have urged the Sonargaon upazila administration, Department of Environment and other relevant authorities to investigate whether the factories have environmental clearances and other required approvals.They also called for an impartial investigation into the factories' legality, environmental compliance, land ownership and the circumstances surrounding their operation, and demanded action if authorities find any violations.Attempts to contact Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain for his comments on the allegations proved unsuccessful.
