Special Correspondent: Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir President Nurul Islam has accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of adopting what he described as the “authoritarian and violent politics” once associated with the Awami League, warning that the party could face public rejection if it fails to abandon such practices.
Speaking as the chief guest at a protest rally in Dhaka on Sunday night, Nurul Islam strongly condemned the killing of Saifullah, a union-level Chhatra Shibir president from Gaibandha, and demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible.
The demonstration, organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, began at the Central Shaheed Minar at around 9:30 pm and concluded with a brief rally at Shahbagh. A large number of party activists, leaders and students participated in the procession.
Addressing the gathering, Nurul Islam alleged that the attack on Saifullah was carried out by BNP and Jubo Dal activists and described the incident as a “barbaric and cowardly act” that has no place in healthy political culture.
“We want to make it clear to the administration that Saifullah’s killers must be arrested immediately and brought to justice. Otherwise, the student community will be compelled to launch a stronger movement on the streets,” he said.
The Chhatra Shibir chief further claimed that there was little difference between the current activities of BNP and those of the former Awami League government, alleging that political violence, extortion and intimidation were continuing under a different banner.
He also said that Chhatra Shibir members were prepared to make sacrifices to ensure the safety of students on campuses and protect the country’s interests.
Among the special guests was Chhatra Shibir Central Office Secretary Azizur Rahman Azad, who sharply criticized both BNP and the administration. He alleged that BNP had followed the path of “enforced disappearances and killings” and accused the party of widespread political domination and intimidation across educational institutions and other sectors.
Azad further claimed that since the establishment of Chhatra Shibir, 32 of its leaders and activists had been killed by BNP and its student wing, Chhatra Dal. He warned against what he termed the continuation of “politics of bloodshed” and called on the administration to act impartially.
“Law enforcement agencies must remove political bias, perform their duties neutrally and ensure the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder,” he said.
