Newspapers and Journalists Are Messengers of Humanity, Says MP Shimul Biswas

Khaled Ahmed: Newspapers and journalists are the true messengers of humanity and have a vital role in fostering patriotism, national unity and human values, Member of Parliament Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas said on Monday.

He made the remarks while addressing the 21st anniversary celebration of the local daily Dainik Sinsa in Pabna. The day-long programme featured poetry recitation, a discussion session, honorary awards for distinguished personalities and a cake-cutting ceremony.

Speaking as the chief guest, the MP urged people to broaden their outlook beyond local boundaries and embrace the vision of a stronger Bangladesh.

"We must not only think about Pabna but about the whole of Bangladesh. Our region once stood among the world's most prosperous civilizations, renowned for its muslin industry, shipbuilding, agriculture, economy, culture and natural resources," he said.

Recalling the country's historical legacy, Shimul Biswas said that after nearly 300 years of deprivation, Bangladesh now has the opportunity to reclaim its past glory and dignity through patriotism, national consciousness and human values.

He stressed that writers, poets, artists and journalists have a crucial responsibility to inspire these ideals in society.

"The greatest responsibility of journalists today is to awaken patriotism and sing the songs of humanity," he said, adding that no nation committed to humanity can ever be defeated.

Calling for social harmony, the MP urged people from all religious and ethnic communities—including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and both hill and plain communities—to work together in building a prosperous and inclusive Bangladesh.

"Humanity must come first. Newspapers and journalists should continue to serve as messengers of humanity with sincerity and dedication," he added.

Referring to the historic Pabna Press Club, he reaffirmed his continued support for its activities and expressed hope that its members would further contribute to the welfare of society.

The event was chaired by veteran educationist and founding leader of the Pabna District BNP, Principal Alhaj Mahatab Uddin Biswas.

Among the special guests were Pabna District Truck Owners' Group President Mozammel Haque Kabir, Pabna Press Club President Akhtaruzzaman Akhtar, former President ABM Fazlur Rahman, Press Club General Secretary Zahurul Islam, BNP Women's Wing leader Purnima Islam, Government Women's College Chemistry Department Head Md Akhtaruzzaman and Rana Group Chairman Ruhul Amin Biswas Rana.

The programme began with a one-minute silence in memory of three late poets—Idris Ali, Altaf Hossain and Azad Ehtesham.

Several academics, journalists, cultural personalities and social leaders also addressed the gathering, while prominent poets presented recitations during the cultural segment.

The organisers honoured the chief guest, special guests and around 40 poets, writers and distinguished personalities with crests and medals in recognition of their contributions.

The ceremony was jointly conducted by Dainik Sinsa Editor Assistant Professor SM Mahbub Alam and Literary Editor and river researcher Dr Monchur Alam. The programme opened with recitation from the Holy Quran by Dr Najmul Haque.
