Sports Desk: Bangladesh dominated top-ranked Australia over the course of four days to register a historic nine-wicket victory in the first of the two-Test series at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Sunday.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto labelled the win as their biggest in any format to date, while stating that they would accomplish more in the future.
'Obviously, I think this is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh cricket in any format,' Shanto told Adam Gilchrist during the post-match presentation. 'We believe that going forward, we will do something special in the future.'
All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz spearheaded the bowling attack in the second innings, taking 5-66 to become the first Bangladeshi spinner to claim a five-wicket haul on Australian soil. His effort restricted the hosts to 284, setting Bangladesh a modest target of 57 runs.
Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque cruised past the total in 14.2 overs after the first innings centurion Tanzid Hasan fell for a duck, with Mominul hitting the winning boundary off Beau Webster before the scheduled tea break on day four.
In an unprecedented display of dominance since earning Test status in 2000, Bangladesh controlled all 11 sessions against a full-strength Australian side, thoroughly outplaying the hosts in every department.
Bangladesh had already secured some memorable away victories in Test cricket, beating Sri Lanka in Colombo in their 100th Test before defeating New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in 2022-widely regarded as their greatest achievement in the format before Sunday. They also swept Pakistan 2-0 in Pakistan in 2024.
Yet, in each of those victories, Bangladesh endured periods of dominance from the opposition. In Darwin, however, Australia were forced to play catch-up almost from the outset after Bangladesh won the toss on the opening morning.
This was Bangladesh's first-ever Test win in Australia, achieved on their third attempt-the joint second-fewest matches any visiting team has needed to register a maiden Test victory Down Under, alongside South Africa, who also achieved the feat in their third match.
Only England, who did it in their second match, got there faster. Pakistan needed seven Tests, while India had to wait 12 matches for their first win in Australia. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, remained winless after 15 attempts.
It was also a performance in which almost everyone contributed. Hasan Mahmud produced a career-best 6-55 in the first innings, becoming the first Bangladesh pacer to claim a five-wicket haul in Test in Australia as he helped bowl the hosts out for just 198.
Bangladesh's response with the bat was equally emphatic, led by Tanzid Hasan's maiden Test century. In just his second Test, Tanzid also became only the fifth Bangladeshi opener to score an away ton.
Captain Shanto also made a valuable contribution with an 84 before Miraz produced a well-composed 64 while shepherding the tail. He then followed up with a fifer-his 15th in Test cricket.
Hasan, who was adjudged as the player of the match, claimed 3-56 in the second innings, taking his match figure to 9-111. This was the third-best figure by a visiting bowler in their first Test in Australia, after Pakistan's Wasim Akram and England's Maurice Tate.
This victory, achieved against all odds, was particularly cherished after the team had suffered an innings defeat to Zimbabwe in their previous Test and had been bowled out for just 54 in their warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI.
Playing their first Test in Australia since 2003, Bangladesh became only the fourth team after India, West Indies and England to win a Test in the country since 2018. It was also their second Test victory over Australia, following their famous win in Mirpur in 2017.
