Mijanur Rahman Akanda, Phulpur: National Fisheries Week 2026 was observed in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh with a series of programmes aimed at promoting fisheries, supporting fish farmers and highlighting the sector’s contribution to Bangladesh’s food security and economy.

The programme included releasing fish fry into a waterbody, a colourful rally, a discussion meeting and a prize-giving ceremony.
A discussion meeting was held at the upazila hallroom on Sunday, with Fulpur Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Shafiqul Islam in the chair. Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Ujjal Hossain conducted the programme.

The programme was also attended by Acting Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Zakir Hossain, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish Fulpur upazila unit vice-president Azharul Islam, local journalists and a large number of fish farmers from different parts of the upazila.
Speakers at the programme emphasised the importance of modern and sustainable fish farming, proper management of fisheries resources and greater support for fish farmers. They also highlighted the role of the fisheries sector in creating employment, ensuring nutritious food and strengthening rural livelihoods.
The observance concluded with recognition and prizes for participants and contributors, underscoring the importance of encouraging farmers and others engaged in the fisheries sector.
With its rivers, ponds, beels and other water resources, Bangladesh has long relied on fisheries as an important source of food and income. Programmes such as National Fisheries Week seek to increase public awareness about responsible fish production and encourage wider participation in the sector.
