Zakir Farazi: A fugitive accused sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in an arms case has been arrested in a joint operation by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The arrested man has been identified as Md. Russel Munsi, son of Serzahan Munsi of Bisharkandi village in Banaripara upazila of Barishal.
According to RAB-8, a joint team from its Barishal Sadar Company and RAB-1, Gazipur, conducted an operation in the Kaliakair police station area of Gazipur on Thursday (August 20) and arrested Russel.
RAB said an arms case was filed against him at Banaripara Police Station on November 27, 2012. The case was numbered 09, with GR Case No. 148/12. After the case was proved in court beyond reasonable doubt, the court sentenced Russel to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Following the announcement of the sentence, Russel allegedly remained on the run for a long period. A warrant for his arrest in connection with the sentence was subsequently issued through Banaripara Police Station.
RAB-8 said the relevant authorities sent a requisition to its commander seeking assistance in executing the arrest warrant. Acting on the request, RAB launched intelligence surveillance and used information-technology-based tracking to determine the fugitive's whereabouts.
After confirming his location, RAB-8, with assistance from RAB-1, carried out the operation in Kaliakair and arrested him.
RAB-8 said Russel Munsi was later handed over to Kaliakair Police Station in Gazipur for further legal proceedings.
The arrest brings to an end the long period during which the convicted fugitive remained beyond the reach of law enforcement, according to RAB.
