Syed Atik, Gazipur: Marking World Drug Day, the Tongi Model Branch of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir organized a cycling rally on Friday morning with the participation of students from Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa, Tongi Campus, to raise awareness against drug abuse.
According to the organizers, hundreds of students gathered with their bicycles at the madrasa grounds after the Fajr prayer. The rally commenced at 6:00 a.m. from the main gate of the madrasa, passed through various roads in the Board Bazar area of Gazipur, and concluded back at the campus. Participants chanted anti-drug slogans throughout the procession, drawing attention to the importance of building a drug-free society.
Among those present at the rally were Sharif Mahmud, Central Training Secretary of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir; Dr. Hafizur Rahman, Jamaat-e-Islami's nominated mayoral candidate for Gazipur City Corporation; Abdullah Al Minhaz, former Health and Environment Secretary of DUCSU; Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Shibir President Zakir Hossain; District President Ismail Pathan; Tongi Model Branch President and Vice President of the Tamirul Millat Central Students' Union Moinul Islam; General Secretary Murtuza Hasan Fuad; and other leaders.
Addressing a brief gathering after the rally, chief guest Sharif Mahmud said that drug addiction has spread across different levels of society, leading to family conflicts and even murders driven by the need for drug money. He warned that if the government fails to take effective action against drugs, the country's conscious student community would be compelled to take to the streets in protest.
He also condemned the reported attack on students in Cumilla for organizing a human chain against drugs, describing the incident as disgraceful for the state and demanding accountability.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Hafizur Rahman expressed concern over the growing spread of drugs in Tongi, stating that drug-related money has contributed to an increase in crimes such as theft and mugging. He called on the authorities to crack down not only on street-level dealers but also on the masterminds and supply networks behind the drug trade. He further urged the government to strengthen surveillance to prevent drugs from entering the country.
Moinul Islam, President of the Tongi Model Branch of Chhatra Shibir, reaffirmed the organization's firm stance against drugs. He said that if the government fails to eliminate the drug menace, the student community, together with Chhatra Shibir, would launch a broader movement against it.
The organizers said the primary objective of the event was to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of drug abuse and to promote the vision of a healthy, disciplined, and drug-free society.
