Md. Mijanur Rahman Akanda, Phulpur: Residents of Rupshi Union in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh formed a human chain on Saturday afternoon, alleging irregularities, corruption and harassment by the entrepreneur of the Rupshi Union Digital Centre.The demonstration was held in front of the Rupshi Union Parishad office, where local residents demanded an investigation into the allegations against entrepreneur Nizam Uddin.Among those who spoke at the programme were local residents Abdul Halim Sarkar, Tofazzal Hossain, Khaleda Begum and Amina Khatun.The speakers alleged that Nizam Uddin had been collecting money from beneficiaries by promising to process various government services, including social safety net benefits. They claimed that applicants who refused to pay were subjected to harassment and rude behaviour.The protesters also alleged that he had collected large sums of money from several people in the name of arranging allowance cards. They further claimed that he continued to maintain links with the now-banned Awami League.Rejecting the allegations, Nizam Uddin said the accusations were part of a smear campaign orchestrated by a group that had demanded Tk 50,000 in extortion from him about one and a half months ago."When I refused to pay, they started spreading false allegations against me," he said, adding that he had already filed a complaint with the local police station over the matter. No immediate statement was available from the local administration regarding the allegations. The claims and counterclaims could not be independently verified. Residents at the human chain urged the authorities to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the matter.
